Three in the Theogony

Hesiod personified Fate and fixed the number at three in his Theogony, a sort of theological catalogue of the Greek deities. Whether he was reflecting contemporary practice, and why three (apart from the general fascination with that particular number), I don't know. Perhaps someone has better information on these points?
